Reuse, Renew, Recycle This Earth Day and Always

Today is Earth Day. Since 1970, EarthDay.org has focused on the small and large steps countries and their citizens can take to address the climate crisis. This year, the focus Restore Our Earth. Actions began earlier this week and continue through today, but according to EarthDay.org, every day should be earth day. While it will largely be up to governments and corporations to make the largest impact in the climate crisis, there are things we can all do to make a difference in our corner of the world.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

By now, most of us have done the basics – we use fluorescent bulbs, we turn off lights when we’re not using them, and we try to reduce, reuse, and recycle everything we can. Municipalities make it easier by offering recycling collection along with trash pickup. Some municipalities, in an effort to encourage more recycling, have even invested in sorting equipment to sort recycling so that residents can simply dump it all in one bin. But EarthDay.org suggests several other actions people can take to make a difference – and these actions do add up.

SIMPLE DAILY EARTH DAY HABITS YOU CAN DO

There are some very simply actions you can take that make a big difference, and they are easy to do.

  1. Carry reusable utensils with you so that if you get lunch out you don’t need to accept the plastic fork they offer with your food.

  2. Carry shopping bags so that you never have to use another plastic grocery sack again.

  3. Try plant-based meats.

Even though these actions may seem small, if each individual commits to them the actions add up.

On a community level, you can also:

  1. Volunteer with EarthDay.org at an event in your community. You can find or register local events here.

  2. Support the Canopy Project, which is working to restore forests.

  3. Increase your climate literacy so that you can be a better earth advocate.
