Organizing and Minimizing Clothes, Shoes, and Purses
Getting and staying organized can be really hard to do. Some people simply feel like they are too busy while others don’t even know where to begin. And more people than you would imagine have some form of disability, from ADHD to hoarding, that keeps them from being able to organize, declutter, and minimize without help. If organization is a problem for you, you’re not alone. We have suggestions to help you take some first steps, and we’re going to start with the closet.
Organizing and Minimizing Clothes
Are you always stressed in the morning when you’re trying to get ready for work? Do you have trouble figuring out what to wear or finding outfits? If you’re having trouble organizing your clothes and accessories, there are many ways to keep things in order. I like to sort clothes by color or by season. I also suggest planning your outfits ahead. Take a few minutes each Sunday and put together a week’s worth of outfits. You can even hang the accessories – necklaces and bracelets on the hangar with the outfit you plan to wear.
If you’re trying to minimize, start by getting rid of anything you’ve had in your closet for over a year without wearing it (yes, even if it has the tags on it still, or even if you paid a lot for it). Then, remove everything that doesn’t fit that you’re saving for when you lose 20, 30, or 40 pounds. When you lose the weight, then you can reward yourself with some new, stylish outfits.
Organizing and Minimizing Shoes and Purses
If you tend to collect shoes and purses like postage stamps (who, me?!), try using a track system or shelves to hold your shoes. And, rotate them in and out of use by season. There is a simple solution for the woman who must have multiple purses (don’t we all?): Hang them up. I like using Command Hooks, which can be removed or adjusted if needed.
If you’re trying to reduce the number of shoes and purses you own, start with the easy ones: purses that are worn, have broken straps, or have not been used in more than a year should go. Use the same process to reduce the number of shoes you own, then go a step further and get rid of the ones that hurt your feet every time you wear them. Life’s too short for sore toes.
Getting organized and minimizing won’t happen overnight, but if you just take it one small step at a time – and get help when you need it – you can become more organized and declutter.
