ADHD and Organizing: Permission to Organize Your Way

For adults with ADHD, organization can feel impossible. But here’s a secret: you are organized. Just not in a way that’s recognizable to someone without ADHD. When you compare yourself to someone who, for example, likes to keep everything neatly tucked away in files and drawers and cupboards, your organized piles of paper might seem disorganized.

You organize and remember information in your own way. Your piles of paper might be the most organized system you can possibly have – for you. And that’s ok. In fact, one of the biggest hurdles we work through with our clients who have ADHD is simply accepting your method for organizing as legitimate, and then finding ways to make it work better for you.

I recently joined ADHD coach Jeff Copper to discuss how concepts from industrial engineering can be used. It’s helps you realize that there is order in your ADHD chaos. Use that to your advantage to build on existing systems that work in your quest to problem-solve.

I hope you’ll watch this 5-minute video below. We dispel the myth that people with ADHD aren’t organized. You are – you do have systems that work for you. And when you have Organizing Maniacs come in to help you organize your home and your life, the last thing we want to do is interrupt the systems you have that are working for you. Instead, we are little investigators who try to understand what you do and how you do it. In this way, we can help you keep what works well and then add to it. Watch the video, and see below for more resources for organizing with ADHD.
