Organizing for Life Transitions

Life transitions often result in new surroundings and energies; we are reorienting ourselves to new ways of being. What you own comes along with you, whether it's physically being packed up in boxes or saying goodbye while you move on to bigger and brighter things. It's important to have tools to prepare for this transition, whether you're moving to a new place or simply looking to create a new mindset where you already are.

Life Transitions Allow for Reflection

You've found yourself facing a big life transition. Think about what led to you undergoing this transition. You might be moving to a new city to start your career. Maybe you're looking for a new apartment or moving into your own space for the first time. Maybe you're just looking for a fresh start and want your old space to have a new feel. Whatever it is, take a moment to reflect on what's bringing you to this moment and how your physical space is impacted. This obviously includes new surroundings but can also be indicative of a change in mindset. The things, both literally and figuratively, that once served you might not anymore. Taking this moment to recognize what you're looking for in this life change can help you feel more grounded and prepared to undertake this change in your life.

Set Goals for Yourself

It's natural when moving to a new space or undergoing a life transition to want things to look a little different. You are changing, and your space is naturally going to change along with it. Take this transition as an opportunity to set out goals for yourself. Maybe you're looking to own less clothing or undertake a more minimalist lifestyle. As you start taking the steps to begin your life transition, set some goals regarding how you want your space to look and how you might want it to change. Take stock of what you've got going on now and what works well and what doesn't. If there's anything you're looking to invest in for your new space, see what you need to do to make it happen. This might include downsizing in other places or saving up to invest.

Plan for Life Transitions

Life transitions are exciting, but they're also often chaotic. It's important to plan for what all needs to be done. If you're moving, this might include what needs to be donated or given away, what's missing, and everything that needs to be packed. If you're looking to downsize, this might include everything you need to go through and find a new home for. Whatever your transition is, give yourself a list of what you want to accomplish and when you want to accomplish it. This will give you goals to work towards and help you stay on track with those goals. Don't be afraid to adjust as you go along - this plan is meant to work for you. If your loved ones are also going through this life transition, make sure you collaborate with them on making this plan so everyone is on the same page and can provide input into the goals.

Stay Realistic about Life Transitions

Life transitions always come with a certain level of expectation, but that expectation isn't always the most realistic. There's a lot of joy and excitement to be had in a change of surroundings and pursuing new goals, and it's normal to want things to go a certain way. You might be looking to improve your mental and/or physical health or get a fresh start. Remember that a change in surroundings or a difference in the objects you own won't change everything, though. You are still the same person, and that person will follow you wherever you go. You are not defined by where you live or what you own. Use these life transitions as opportunities to expand on current life and give yourself a fresh perspective.

Any big life transition comes with a certain amount of work. Not only are you emotionally preparing for this change, but you physically need to prepare as well. Being organized and intentional about how you're utilizing and navigating your physical space while undergoing this transition can not only help you feel less stressed about the physical preparation but gives you a head start on mentally preparing yourself as well. Your space is the first step you can take as you step into the new you.
