Maniac Book Club: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins

The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins is the perfect book for anyone who is struggling and needs motivation to launch themselves into action.

“It is not the big moves that define our lives. It is the smallest one that matter.” Mel Robbins

5 Second Rule was written because the author found herself struggling financially, emotionally, and professionally. She was watching the shuttle launch and the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown inspired her. The next morning, she used it to literally launch herself out of bed and get moving. Her TedTalk has now been viewed more than 8 million times!

HOW TO GET STARTED USING THE 5-SECOND RULE

Think about one goal you really want to accomplish

  • What habit do you want to change?

  • What room do you want to get organized?

Count backwards: 5-4-3-2-1

If your goal is to organize your basement, but you burst into tears
every time you head down the stairs because you don’t know
how/where to start, then try the countdown. While at the top of the
stairs, take control of your brain by counting 5-4-3-2-1. When you
finish the countdown, you’ll want to be at the bottom of the stairs,
ready to launch into action

  • Pick a pile and GO!

  • Set a realistic goal to sort one box, one drawer or a small area at a
    time

5 Second Rule is a good read for anyone who is struggling to make needed changes or tackle an important project. One thing to take away from this book is that you are never going to feel like it! When was the last time you said to yourself “I can’t wait to start a new habit?” Okay, maybe a few hands went up right now, but mostly, no one wants to start a new habit. Break your goals down into manageable steps, and get to it.

5 – 4- 3 – 2 – 1 …

MANIAC TAKEAWAY

Your goal can be anything!

Your goal to make a change doesn’t have to be a physical change like getting organized, it could be an interpersonal action, like staying positive, going to the gym, or saying no.
