Make Organizing Fun

Why is it that talk of organizing your home, office, or life goes hand in hand with stress and overwhelm? We think it’s possible to make organizing fun. In fact, most of the time when we’re working with clients or in their homes, we are smiling and laughing and experiencing the joy right along with our clients as they see the potential of their space start to come to life. It doesn’t hurt that, at the same time, the stress is melting away. But that’s just it – organizing, while it can be hard and sometimes emotional work, is also incredibly satisfying.

HOW DO I MAKE ORGANIZING FUN?

Turn on some music! That’s really a great place to begin, because it electrifies you and gets you moving. Start envisioning what getting organized will look like for you. Getting organized doesn’t mean making everything dull or boring. It just means making it less cluttered and more you.

GET HELP FROM A FRIEND

One of the best ways to make organizing more fun is to get help. Whether you call a friend or a professional, having a second pair of eyes to help you determine what to keep, donate, and toss. If you have a friend who is more organized than you, enlist their help. If not, you can always enlist the help of a professional organizer. We already love what we do and can help you see the fun it it too.

LISTEN TO A PODCAST

Listen to something fun while you work, like a podcast. Try out Alan Alda’s Clear + Vivid where he interviews celebrities and has great conversations. If you’re more interested in fashion, listen to My Wardrobe Malfunction with Susannah Constantine. For those seeking an uplifting 30 minutes, give Ophrah’s SuperSoul Conversations a try.

REWARD YOURSELF

Commit to working on the project for an hour before indulging in that last slice of chocolate cake. Make plans to meet with a friend so that you can have something to look forward to when you’re done. Take before and after photos to share.

ORGANIZED DOESN’T MEAN BORING

Choose containers and storage solutions that speak to your personality. Not everyone needs the clear plastic box with the white lid. Go for purple.

ORGANIZED DOESN’T MEAN EMPTY

Choose some of your favorite decor pieces and as you organize. Imagine how the space will look when you’re done organizing. Picture the piece in that will allow you to feature them more prominently.

BREAK RULES

Organized doesn’t mean every book in alphabetical order lined up uniformly on the shelf like a little unit of soldiers. Maybe you take a selection of your favorite Stephen King novels and stack them on a shelf next to a vase with black silk roses. Differentiating the way the books are shelved can make the room more interesting.

EXPERIMENT

Store items in fun containers, such as old teacups and paper covered coffee cans. Use baskets to sort things. If you have a great collection of handbags, get them out of the closet and hang them on the wall. Let your personality shine through.

Organizing does not have to be an arduous and sad process. You can make organizing fun by trying these tips and by allowing your personality to shine through.
