Organizing Helps You Fall in Love with Your Home Again

Did you know that organizing your home helps you fall in love with it again? It’s easy to blame the space for your lack of desire to still be in it, and there are times when a remodel is in order. But sometimes, it’s just clutter getting in the way of seeing the potential your home still has.

Going Back to the Beginning

Do you remember when you first moved into your home? Were you excited to decorate it and make it your own? Did you shop for items to help decorate the space? How do you feel about your home now? Does it feel tired, or just like it’s a lot of hard work?

Finding that Feeling Again

If you want to fall in love with your home again, one of the best ways to start is to declutter. You don’t have to declutter the whole home. You can start with an area of your home, whether it’s a bedroom, bathroom, the kitchen, or the laundry room, and focus on it. The idea with decluttering is to bring the space back to what it was when you first bought or moved into the place. By removing as much as you can from the space, you can begin to see the potential of it again – you can be inspired.

What Do I Do with Everything in the Space that I Take Out?

With any luck, a lot of what you declutter from a space is stuff that actually has another space it belongs in your house, or you no longer need to keep it. Things you no longer need to keep can be donated or gifted to someone else. Some items simply need to find their way to the trash bin.

Why Decluttering Helps You Fall in Love with Your Home Again

Clutter causes stress. When you are stressed, everything is more aggravating, more challenging, and harder to deal with. The mess of clutter can make you feel like it’s the house’s fault – that if you just had a bigger laundry room or a bathroom where the door was in a different place, or a better closet space in your bedroom, then everything would be better. But really, it’s not the house (not always – sometimes we really are living in cramped spaces where more room could make a difference, but even then, organizing and decluttering can help!). When you start to peel away the layers of clutter that have built up over the time you’ve lived in the home, you reveal space you didn’t know you had. It can be almost magical.

Declutter + Organize and Transform Your Home

Each space you choose to declutter is an opportunity to re-envision the space again. And as you see the space in a new light, you can think about different ways to organize – using containers, over the door shoe holders, shelving, baskets, and more – to make the space more functional and accessible. You might even decide certain spaces in your house can be completely repurposed. For example, if you have a child who has moved out, their room might become a craft room or, depending on its location, a large pantry. It might even become your walk-in closet. How you use your home now doesn’t have to be how you always have, especially as dynamics, hobbies, and residents change.

It can be overwhelming to think of your whole home as a decluttering project, so I suggest that you break it into small pieces that are more easily manageable. Part of determining how to do that is to think about how much time you have to spend on decluttering. You may only have 20 minutes a day, and that’s OK! You simply choose to focus on one drawer or one shelf or one corner at a time. You will start to see the difference in no time at all. Just don’t try to do the whole house at once. Pick a smaller project that fits your time available and focus on that until it’s done.
