March Madness – A Time Management Trick

I was recently working with a client who had called to get her office organized. She was frustrated by piles of paperwork around her home office. She wanted help to create a filing system for her home and business paperwork. She also wanted to know any strategies that could help her to manage time. She has ADHD and struggles to accomplish what she needs to each day, although she is always busy and working on something. She was feeling frustrated and wanted to give up.

While we were sorting paper I came across a detailed bracket lineup (is it called a lineup?) where she had outlined last year’s March Madness basketball picks and stats and teams and all sorts of things I didn’t understand. Her eyes immediately lit up and she explained the whole thing to me. It was the so incredibly complex and required her to use so many of the executive functions she had not been able to apply to her work papers.

I just stared at her and smiled and she asked me why. Because, I said, we’ve just found the key.

From then on we worked together to develop time management and filing systems for her that mimicked the bracket system. We used parallels between how she approached that and how she could approach other tasks and suddenly things made more sense to her. You see, the problem wasn’t with her or her abilities, it was with thinking that she had to work in a conventional way. She was fighting her natural brain style instead of embracing it. She is like most of us. So I challenge you to look at your struggles with a fresh perspective. Identify what you are really good at and passionate about and find the connections between that and what areas you’d like to improve. Be creative, be bold, be you.

Happy organizing!
