Willpower Doesn’t Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success by Benjamin Hardy is the needed guide for today’s over-stimulating and addicting environment.

In Willpower Doesn’t Work, Benjamin Hardy explains that the most important action necessary to accomplish a goal it to put yourself in an environment that supports your goal.

“We rely on willpower to create change in our lives…but what if we’re thinking about it all wrong? Hardy explains that willpower is nothing more than a dangerous fad, one that is bound to lead to failure. Instead of “white-knuckling” your way to change, you need to instead alter your surroundings to support your goals.”

Hardy acknowledged the connection to all of our undiagnosed addictions. We only seriously consider drug addicts and alcoholics as people having real addiction issues. Ultimately, we wouldn’t tell a drug addict to just get over his addiction and do better. Yet that’s exactly what we expect from those suffering from other compulsive behaviors…if they just tried harder, they could do better. If only it were that easy! Instead, he offered up several principles to help. These were our favorites:

Principle #1 – Don’t be a slave to your environment

Don’t be a slave to technology, TV watching, unhealthy eating, jobs that are not making you happy, and of course, all of the clutter scattered around you!

Principle #2 – Wherever you are, that’s where you should be

Be present. If you are out to dinner, pay attention to the people you are with, not wondering what’s happening in the world around you.

Principle #3 – Act on instinct and intuition, not impulse and dependence

Just because you could do something doesn’t mean you should do it.

Principle #4 – You need deep human connections to overcome any addiction 

Be out in the world with people. Whenever you can, pick up the phone instead of texting.

Maniac Takeaway

This book is a great read for all types of people. Those diagnosed with ADHD will find that the book contains some great strategies to help you get more out of your day while facing the challenges of everyday life.
