Maniac Book Club: The Power of When by Michael Breus, PhD
Our most recent Maniac Book club selection was The Power of When by Michael Breus, PhD. Breus is a clinical psychologist and a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He’s also a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Using over 200 evidence based studies, he encourages the reader to stop worrying about the how and why of what they are doing. They should instead focus on when they are doing it!

Our biological clock sets our energy level throughout the day. It releases hormones that have different effects on our body and brain. By looking at our natural sleep patterns, Dr. Breus was able to categorize four distinct chronotypes: the lion, the bear, the wolf, and the dolphin. A chronotype is the internal circadian rhythm or body clock of an individual. It influences the cycle of sleep and activity in a 24-hour period. Each chronotype has over 100 circadian rhythms associated with it. By combining the knowledge of what activities are involved in which circadian rhythms, you can identify the best time of the day to do just about everything and anything in your life.
