Home Organization – Form versus Function

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and tackle that home organization project. Maybe it’s your kitchen, perhaps it’s your office, or the kids room, or even.. the basement. Whichever area around the house you’ve chosen to organize there comes a point at which you must decide how you are going to reorganize your space. Are you going to chose to make it the most functional it can be? Is your goal to make it aesthetically pleasing? Are you looking for a happy medium? My inclination is to be heavy-handed on the functional side, using my loyal clear plastic bins and label-maker. Luckily Organizing Maniacs has a team of women with varying opinions on the home organization form verses function spectrum.

Cris drew some inspiration from the folks at  Chairish, an online marketplace for vintage furniture who shared with us how easy it is to add a bit of flare to any organizing project. One of her favorite pieces is an armoire, which is more versitle than people give it credit for. It can be used in the kitchen to hide overflow or large pieces, it can be used to store crafts or school supplies in the dining room, or in the basement for gift wrapping.

If you’re looking for something with the practical nature of bins but with a more attractive outcome, The Container Store has a wide selection of decorative storage bins. Creating a space that you love is just as important as creating a space that is functional.

Whichever direction you end up going with your home organizing project I’ll leave you with an insider tip. Don’t purchase any bins or storage solutions until after you’ve sorted, purged, and decluttered. You should always know what exactly it is you’re going to store and how you’re going to use it before you look for a way to store it.

Happy Organizing!
