How To Get Started
We all have that project. The one we think about every once in a while but then suddenly remember we’re supposed to be doing something…anything but that. Maybe it’s cleaning out your garage for the spring. Maybe it’s going through that overflowing filing cabinet in your office. Perhaps it’s decluttering your kitchen. Whatever the home organization project, now is the time to get started. Easier said that done, right? Have no fear, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success and learn how to get started.
Break it down into bite-sized pieces
Deciding to clean out the basement storage unit is a noble, but daunting task. Rather than approaching the project as a whole, consider chunking up the work into more manageable steps. Pick two boxes to go through after dinner then call it a night. This will allow you to make progress of your goal, but not feel overwhelmed by it and you will therefore be less likely to give up and walk away. As the project gets easier, add a little bit more time or complexity to the tasks. You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish by chipping away at it just a little bit at a time!
Make yourself accountable
Tell someone you trust and who is supportive what you goal is. Let them know what bite-sized piece you’re going to focus on each week. Saying your goals out loud will make them more solid and could work to push you into getting started. Be sure to pick someone who supports you in a positive, helpful way and who motivates you to achieve your goals.
Grab a buddy
Still stuck? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. And maybe you shouldn’t be. Grab a friend, coworker, or other helper and have them come hang out with you while you start on your project. Just having another person in the room can be incredibly motivating. You can also chat while you work and maybe even laugh a bit to help the task along.
If you find yourself burning out, don’t try to muscle through it. It’s ok to take breaks. It’s better to walk away from the space you’re working on for a few minutes and then come back to it than to try to work through a set amount of time. After a break, you’ll find yourself more relaxed and have more energy to devote to the task at hand.
Once you’ve started, let the rewards begin! Celebrate any and all forward progress. We avoid certain home organization projects for a reason – they are hard for us for some reason. When you accomplish something difficult, you should get a reward! Buy yourself a piece of chocolate cake, take a longer break, or go see that movie you’ve been wanting to see. Bottom line – celebrate yourself and all that you’ve accomplished, and do it regularly.
