Spending time together as a family doesn’t have to involve stuff or leave you with a house full of clutter to pick up at the end of the day.

Take a trip to the library.  Borrowing books from the library allows kids to experience a wide range of stories and books without overwhelming your bookshelves.

Go for an outdoor adventure.  The DC metro area is a playground for outdoor adventures.  See which parks are in your area here:

  1. Virginia – http://www.virginia.org/directory/OutdoorsandSports/StateParks/
  2. Maryland – http://www.dnr.state.md.us/cin/
  3. Washington D.C. – http://dpr.dc.gov/page/parks-and-recreation-facilities

Host a cooking class.  If you’d rather not brave the intense summer heat, why not pass the time passing on a favorite family recipe?  Spending time cooking with your kids is not only fun, but it takes care of an item on your checklist – making dinner!

Put on a family play.  Have your kids write their own play or act out a story they already know.  Use items from around the house to encourage creativity without purchasing more stuff.

Visit a museum; skip the gift shop.  The DC metro area has a museum for any interest and as an added bonus all of the Smithsonian attractions are free of charge.  Check out which might be the best for your kids at http://www.si.edu/Museums.

Happy Organizing!
